Mark has served in ministry with The Presbyterian Church in Canada for over two decades, starting as Director of Music and Ruling Elder for a rural congregation in Ontario. His first call as Minister of Word and Sacraments was to a New Church Development in Spruce Grove, AB.
He has lived in the Edmonton region ever since, working as Children & Youth Coordinator at First Presbyterian, Intercultural & LGBTQ Missioner with the United Church of Canada, Minister at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Edmonton, and Instructor at St. Stephen’s College, U. of A.
In 2023, Mark completed his Doctor of Ministry from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. His most recent role has been as Regional Minister for the Presbytery of the Northwest, an innovative experiment in ministry that uses videos and technology to serve multiple congregations across Alberta.
Mark sees the role of minister as that of a gardener. It is Christ who plants the seed, but the experienced gardener will be attentive to the dynamics of each garden, knowing what will grow in what season, and is not afraid to work hard to tend the soil, water, and weed, through preaching, pastoral care, evangelism, Christian education, and leadership in the management of the church. Mark’s preaching focuses on Scripture, shifting perspectives in ways that bring new insights.
Mark plays piano and violin, is an avid reader, and enjoys gardening, knitting, and paddle boarding. He was proud to help another couple realize their dream to have a child, and regularly spends time with his now 13 year old daughter. Mark has a great love for the City of Edmonton, especially our festivals, and is excited by the opportunity to build on First Presbyterian’s historic presence and ministry in the city.
