Biography

Janet Taylor, Guest preacher in Edmonton

Rev. Janet Taylor is a minister of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. She came to ministry after working in medical records, in new home construction and as a care aide. She graduated from the Vancouver School of Theology in 2017 with a Master of Divinity (Honours), and that July was ordained and inducted as minister of two congregations that had just joined in a shared ministry: Braeside Presbyterian Church in St. Albert and Westmount Presbyterian Church in Edmonton. She was minister of Westmount from July 2017 to May 2019, and served Braeside for nine years, retiring in 2026.

At Westmount she joined a congregation that had replaced its aging building with a smaller church alongside sixteen homes of affordable family housing, where newcomer families made their homes. Janet marvelled at how quickly those families became part of the neighbourhood, joining the community league and local programs and getting to know their neighbours.

At Braeside she guided the congregation through a hard decision. In 2023, after 55 years in its building, Braeside concluded that the building had become too big and too costly for a congregation its size, and moved to a smaller home so that more of its resources could go to serving others, including food hampers for students and international projects. For Braeside’s 60th year in St. Albert, Janet edited Faith in Action: Braeside Church On the Move, the story of that move. “We wanted to be able to share our experience and hopes with other congregations,” she said.

Janet serves on the national Archives and Records Committee of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Her articles have been published in the Presbyterian Record, and she has written reflections for the Presbytery of Edmonton-Lakeland, among them pieces on the journey of the Magi and on the Bible’s images of God’s motherly compassion.

In spring 2026 she was honoured with a St. Albert Interfaith “Woman of Distinction” award for her work in interfaith collaboration in her community.
