The trusted voice

A shepherd's voice is not a loud voice. It is a familiar one. The sheep in John's gospel do not follow because they are driven; they follow because they recognize who is speaking.

Ezekiel writes to a people whose shepherds had fed themselves and not the flock. The complaint is specific: the weak were not strengthened, the sick were not healed, the injured were not bound up, the strayed were not brought back. It is the kind of list that names what care actually consists of, and it is uncomfortable reading for anyone who leads anything.

I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out.

Ezekiel 34:11

Psalm 23 is read at almost every funeral, which has made it hard to hear as anything other than comfort. But the psalm is not sentimental. It walks through the valley. It sets a table in the presence of enemies. The comfort it offers is not that the danger is absent, but that we are accompanied through it.

Peter writes to people suffering unjustly and does not tell them their suffering is good. He tells them whose they are. That distinction matters. A church that has stood on this corner since 1912 has watched a great deal pass through this city, and what has held is not certainty about outcomes but a voice its people learned to recognize.

So the question this week is a plain one: whose voice do you trust, and how did you come to trust it? Not which arguments you find convincing. Which voice you would follow into the valley.
